Refugiums
|
About 5 weeks into the setup of my new 90 gallon salt water aquarium I noticed that I was having some problems with micro bubbles in my tank. I had decided earlier that I didn't have the time or the resources at this point to go ahead with a larger refugium positioned above the display tank, so I knew that I wanted to create a smaller refugium and bubble trap combination in the sump area. - [Details] |
This is a decidedly low-tech and inexpensive 10g refugium ("fuge" moving forward) that is home to fast growing low light plants and several shrimp. It and the main tank are on opposite lighting schedules, which should keep oxygen and co2/pH levels in the system constant. Some would say this isn't a fuge because of the lighting schedule and inclusion of filtration, but I don't know what else to call it. I hope this log is of help to you, especially if you're a fellow newbie <img border="0" src="smileys/smile.gif" border="0"> - [Details] |

So, from a non-scientific and hobbyist's perspective, let's talk refugiums! - [Details] |

DIY sump, using glass or acrylic baffles - http://www.melevsreef.com/acrylics/sumps/glass/ - Hits: 126 Building your own sump using a glass tank isn't hard, nor does it have to be expensive. Many choose to use a glass aquarium, and then insert 1/4" (glass or acrylic) baffles. Below is merely an example. You may tailor the design to your particular needs and space. - [Details] |
A refugium is used such that the populations of such fauna as isopods, amphipods and copepods is not totally eliminated by preditation by the fish. The fauna has a place to live and multiple without being eaten by the fish. It is quite easy for the fauna to move freely into the main display tank in some way, but such that not all the population is lost. - [Details] |
